MAKONDE INSPIRATION

The Makonde, a people of Bantu origin, have for generations inhabited the coastal lands and inland forests of southeastern Tanzania, between Mtwara and Lindi, extending their presence into Mozambique. Their way of settling is rooted in a deep connection to the land and a harmonious relationship with its natural richness. They speak Makonde, a Bantu language that coexists with Swahili, the region’s common tongue. Through wood carving and shanga—the delicate craft of everyday beadwork—they express their worldview. Their rituals, artistic practices, symbolic nudity, and social life reveal a people deeply grounded in their origins and their ancestral spirit.
